Description
Stroke is the second leading cause of death and a major cause of disability worldwide classified as ischemic stroke or hemorrhagic stroke. Elevated blood pressure is the highest risk factor, and death and disability is high.
Improvements in prevention, acute treatment, and neurorehabilitation have led to a substantial decrease in the burden of stroke over the past 30 years. Traumatic brain injury is trauma to one or several parts of the Brain. Like any trauma it is primarily produced in four ways: by mechanical forces (gunshot, knife, explosion), radiation sources (excessive sunlight, ionizing radiation), temperature (freezing, heat) and chemical sources (toxins).
Symptoms
- Altered level of consciousness
- Aphasia
- One-sided weakness
- Facial droop
- Unequal pupil size
- Ataxia, nausea/vomiting
- TBI = Behavioral dysfunction, changes in social interaction, risk taking, altered level of consciousness, uneven pupils, aphasia, ataxia, headache, nausea.
How Cannabis Can Help
Cannabinoids for stroke or head injury are studied due to their nature as neuroprotective antioxidants capable of modulating excessive glutamate and other neurotransmitters and increasing blood flow. Preclinical research shows CB1 antagonists coupled with CB2 agonists reduced inflammation and increased blood flow during occlusion.
